Walking York Walls

30th March 2015

York WallsMet Geo Environmental has completed a survey of the York walls to inform a major development in the city centre.

A Scheduled Ancient Monument and Grade 1 listed building, the city or ‘bar’ walls of York are the longest and most complete example of medieval city walls still standing in England and amongst the best known heritage sites in the world.

Yet in 1800, the Corporation of York applied for an Act of Parliament to demolish them. In addition to the poor condition of the walls at the time, the narrow gateways of the bars were inconvenient and the walls themselves hindered the city’s expansion.

Since the mid-nineteenth century they have been restored and maintained for public access attracting some 2.5 million visitors to walk the 3.4 kilometer surviving walls around the city.

Whilst not quite requiring a full circuit by our laser survey team, we are nevertheless proud to be playing a small part in the latest expansion of this wonderful city.
