Met Geo Environmental Director of Operations (Geophysics and Utility Mapping) Sam Roberts has been made a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Civil Engineering Surveyors (CICES).

The award has been made in recognition of his contribution to the development of a number of important industry standards and initiatives over the last two years.

In 2013-14 Sam, who was Deputy Chair of the Utility Mapping Association at the time, worked with the British Standards Institute and the Institute of Civil Engineers towards the development of PAS128, Specification for underground utility detection, verification and location’.

PAS128 established industry-wide protocols for the recording of buried utility service infrastructure such as water pipes and power cabling, with the aim of reducing the risk of construction and maintenance project delays and costs arising from the use of poor quality and inaccurate utility information as well as injury to construction contractors from hidden utility infrastructure.

He has also contributed to the formation of the utilities aspect of the revised industry standard for Measured Surveys launched in 2014 by the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) on behalf of The Survey Association (TSA).

Sam is now leading Met GE’s role as consulting partner to the European Commission funded RBP Healtec project which aims to develop a vehicle mounted non-destructive system capable of detecting pavement defects, in real time, removing the need for traffic management.
