The makeover of the Halifax Piece Hall is finally to get underway in what is being heralded as a major “milestone” in the history of the town.
The Grade 1 listed building is the focus of a £18.9m Transformation Project that will see it restored and revitalised, creating a 21st century heritage visitor and business location, with the addition of an interpretation and learning centre, a new east extension and a re-designed courtyard.
Calderdale Council Leader Councilor Tim Swift hailed the development as: “a real milestone in the history of Halifax. The transformed Piece Hall will be an iconic attraction, and a world class heritage destination.”
“We’re heading into an exciting new chapter for the Piece Hall, and I’m really looking forward to seeing it reopen in spring 2016, with its state-of-the-art interpretation and learning centre, shops and businesses and beautiful courtyard,” he said.
Met Geo Environmental provided the topographical, measured building and elevation surveys that have informed plans for the Transformation Project over several phases, extending beyond the principle quadrangle to include the former Industrial museum and derelict Square Chapel Tower.
Built over 200 years ago the Georgian masterpiece was originally a marketplace for cloth trading and is now a thriving centre with a gallery, art & craft shops and cafés. The Piece Hall will close on January 17 ahead of works later this year, with its transformation scheduled to be completed by Spring 2016.
