Project Overview

Penistone markets area in the town centre is undergoing a £15 million redevelopment. Met Consultancy Group (Met) have been commissioned to carry out design and detailing for the civil engineering works relating to the highway, drainage and retaining wall components.

The scheme will provide:

  • 190 space town centre car park
  • Fire station
  • Ambulance station
  • Markets area
  • Council Depot building
  • Fur and feather market
  • Access road
  • Tesco food store
  • Bowling Green

The highway works include the design of a new roundabout and access road, involving full horizontal and vertical alignment design. Other areas in the town are to be upgraded via resurfacing works and general improvements. Met negotiated and obtained technical approval from the Local Highway Authority

and a Section 278 Agreement was entered into following detailed design and liaison.

The drainage works required a Section 104 Agreement to be entered into with Yorkshire Water. Surface water storage and attenuation was required to limit surface water run-off into the existing sewerage system.

Gradients within Penistone meant Met designed and detailed a number of retaining wall structures, including some which required technical approval from the Highway Authority.

The regeneration of this part of Penistone will boost the local economy and increase the vitality of the area for many years to come.
